What could top the hellfire that has been 2020? How about an actual fire on live television that absolutely refuses to go out?
While this year’s Emmy awards ceremony was conducted in front of an empty audience, it did not let its spark extinguish. To announce 2020’s Best Lead Comedy Actress, Jennifer Aniston came onstage to join host Jimmy Kimmel, who took extra precautions to stave off the coronavirus by sanitizing the envelope containing the winner’s name.
After heavily sterilizing the card with Lysol, a move Aniston described as “extreme,” Kimmel threw it into a basket and lit it on fire to kill any surviving germs.
Aniston was tasked to put out the flames, which she attempted with a fire extinguisher. The blaze diminished for a second, but only to return stronger.
This happened a number of times. The canceled 2020 Tokyo Olympics called, it wants its flame back.
Viewers couldn’t help but label the moment as a meme for the ugly and relentless 2020—a year stricken with forced change, disease, natural disasters, and racial injustice.
After a few tries, Aniston thankfully managed to put out the fire.
“Jen saves the day!” Kimmel’s team recounted in a sharing of the moment.
